MINNEAPOLIS, MN.—October 8, 2003—enXco, Inc. was recently granted approval from the Ford County Board of Commissioners to build a wind project near Spearville, Kansas. The first phase of construction, expected to be completed in 2004, will result in 50 to 80 megawatts (MW) of wind energy, and the final phase will bring the total to 200 MW. The project when completed will provide electricity for approximately 70-thousand homes on an average annual basis.
The positive response from the Ford County Board can be attributed to great support from local officials. Ford County Chairman Fred Casterline led the county board meeting discussion by stating, "We would like to see this project proceed. Not only is this a benefit to the County of Ford and surrounding areas, it is also a benefit to the regional power grid. It's the best thing that can happen. We would like to do anything we can do to help."
The Spearville site was chosen to take advantage of the strong wind resource and close proximity to suitable electric transmission and distribution facilities. When completed, the project will dot the Kansas ridge with approximately 135 wind turbines.
"We are pleased to work with the landowners, local officials and electric utilities to develop this welcomed wind development. enXco will continue working diligently with stakeholders keeping them informed of the project's progress," emphasized Paul White, enXco Midwest project director.
The local officials and landowners have demonstrated a high level of interest and enthusiasm for the wind farm. Charles Konrade, the Spearville/Windthorst School Board President said, "As a result of extensive research and discussion, we firmly believe the Spearville Wind Energy Project will positively impact the local school district in several ways including increased student populations, monetary support and economic growth in the community of Spearville."
enXco is currently in discussions with several regional electric utilities who will purchase this valued energy resource. "enXco's success is the result of our ability to drive down the cost of energy production, to where we now compete with other power producers and fuel sources," said Jim Walker, enXco's chief executive officer. "With enXco's financing capability, coupled with the latest turbine technology, wind power can compete with traditional electricity generating fuels."
enXco, Inc., based in North Palm Springs, California has developed and owned wind energy projects in the United States for nearly 20 years. enXco's wind energy experience includes long-term operation and maintenance of more than 4,000 wind turbines in areas as diverse as Searsburg, Vermont and Mojave, California. The average annual availability on enXco-managed projects consistently exceeds 98 percent. The company's development team has completed projects for Pacific Gas & Electric, Florida Power & Light, the U. S. Navy, the U. S. Air Force, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Southern California Edison, Xcel Energy, and Great River Energy, among others.
