The Tyler Bluff Wind Project is ideally located where moderate to high wind speeds blow steady across a simple terrain. This combination yields a very favorable wind regime to reliably generate clean electricity.
Procter & Gamble (P&G) will purchase 80% of the Project’s estimated generation in order to power all of its North American Fabric & Homecare plants. Originated by the OwnEnergy team, the Project is expected to achieve commercial operation in December 2016. With this offtake agreement, P&G’s iconic American brands will be “100% produced with wind power.” Directly procuring wind energy demonstrates P&G’s commitment to improving consumer’s lives by reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.
The partnership was announced at the White House October 19th, as P&G became a signatory of the ‘American Business Act on Climate Pledge’. As part of the pledge, P&G agreed to achieve 30 percent renewable energy to power its plants globally by 2020, with a long term vision to use 100 percent renewable energy. This comes on the heels of a September announcement where P&G committed to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2020.
To celebrate the scale of the collaboration, P&G Fabric & Home Care and EDF RE have constructed a mini-wind farm in Washington DC. The installation is placed on the lawn in front of the Capitol Building and is made up of thousands of spinning pinwheels.
