Karen Patterson, a Renewable Energy Technician II at Maverick Solar in Desert Center, California, is living her passion for sustainability and renewable energy. She has dedicated her career to reducing environmental impact and pushing boundaries in solar energy innovation, and her commitment to living a “green life” shines through in every aspect of her work.

How did you come to work at EDF power solutions?
After completing Wind/Solar Technical Training at North West Renewable Energy Institute (NWREI) in Vancouver, Washington, I applied for several solar and wind companies. I interviewed with EDF power solutions and got hired shortly afterward.
Describe your current role.
My day as a technician centers around advanced troubleshooting and repair, preventative and corrective maintenance, electrical system interventions, and enforcing safety and compliance policies.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
My appetite for learning new skills is insatiable. I love that each day on the solar site brings an opportunity to dive into new work experiences and learn from other skilled staff members who are working on an array of projects. I also make a conscious effort to live a green life, be sustainable, and minimize negative impacts on the environment.
What is one lesson you’ve learned during your time here that you’d like to share with others?
When you have a career goal and work for a company that supports upward mobility, no matter the gender, race, or age, the sky is the limit on where you can go.
What do you enjoy most about the company culture?
I love working for a company that actively helps customers reduce their carbon footprint, while also supporting the growth and development of its employees. EDF power solutions is about collaboration, empowerment, and making a difference.
What personal achievement are you most proud of?
No matter what is happening around me, I stay true to myself by radiating happiness, kindness, and respect. I believe in uplifting others and maintaining positivity in all circumstances.
What is your favorite energy innovation?
I deeply admire innovations that produce sustainable energy from unusual places, like turning former landfills, brownfields, and wastewater treatment plants into on-site solar facilities. These projects give overlooked spaces a second life while contributing to sustainable energy generation, and they inspire me to think creatively in my work.
