Ruth Stephens, Digital Governance Manager based in San Diego, California, has been making a transformative impact since joining the company. With her expertise in cybersecurity and digital governance, Ruth works tirelessly to safeguard the company’s systems, ensuring that our mission-driven projects in clean energy thrive within a secure digital environment. Passionate about progress and sustainability, Ruth seamlessly combines her professional skills with her personal values to help protect the planet for future generations.

How did you come to work at EDF power solutions?
I’d been working as an internal cybersecurity auditor at another company and was very interested in the opportunity to develop and establish an internal cybersecurity audit and compliance program for EDF. Working for a smaller company where my contributions could be very impactful, and for one in the clean energy field, was especially appealing.

Describe your current role.
My role has expanded and changed from the early days and now involves not only cybersecurity, but all digital compliance, risk, and governance. My daily tasks involve managing internal audits, identifying and assessing digital risks, and providing documents and guidance for enabling governance in all areas of IT such as architecture, applications, and data.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Knowing that I’m helping reduce the digital risk to our company is most rewarding. I want nothing more than to leave a clean planet for my kids and future grandkids, and the work I’m doing contributes to the continued secure functioning of our systems that support our important projects in the low-carbon energy field.

What is one lesson you’ve learned during your time here that you’d like to share with others?
I’ve learned that though progress can sometimes feel slow, when you look back over the last six months or a year, you can be really surprised at how much progress has been made, and the impact of your work.

What do you enjoy most about the company culture?
I enjoy working for a company where everyone is passionate about the work they’re doing. It provides an energy (no pun intended!) to everyday work that you don’t find in every organization.

What personal achievement are you most proud of? 
I’m very proud of raising two incredible, kind, compassionate, hardworking young men. Being a mother and seeing the positive impact I’ve made on their lives gives me a sense of fulfillment that aligns with my values of fostering growth and leaving a better world for future generations.

What is your favorite energy innovation? 
I’m partial to solar. We’ve had solar panels at our house since 2013, and the impact has been huge. I love that everyday people can use this alternate energy source to not only help their own electric bill, but also reduce reliance on traditional energy. Solar makes renewable energy accessible, which is a powerful step toward a cleaner planet—something I care deeply about as both a professional and a parent.

Dream vacation: 
Tops on my list is visiting Iceland, where the beauty and opportunity for outdoor adventures are unending.

Favorite book: 
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The lessons are timeless, as seen in the many movie and TV adaptations of this classic novel.

Favorite hobby:
Being outdoors—hiking, biking, paddleboarding, zip lining, rappelling. Nature soothes my soul, and I love adventure and physical challenges.
